Hypnobirthing for every kind of birth
One of the biggest myths about hypnobirthing is that it only works if labour starts spontaneously and everything goes to plan. At a lecture I gave once at University, I asked ever midwife in the room to raise their hands if they believed that hypnobirthing was for just for a physiological birth - nearly all raised their hands.
In reality, the skills taught in hypnobirthing are most valuable when birth is complex, medical, or unpredictable, because they support nervous-system regulation, clear thinking, and adaptability.
If things change even a little bit a birth can plan can be completely derailed without proper preparation.
That’s why my approach is designed for every kind of birth.
Hypnobirthing and induction
I strongly believe that many women have so much fear prior to birth that it stops labour starting because there there is so much adrenaline. Part of my course is to create a calmer mindset in the days and weeks before birth so that oxytocin rises as it should and labour begins when it's meant to. There are tracks to do this.
If for any reason someone is induced, Induction changes the rhythm of birth, and that can affect both the body and the mind.
From a physiological perspective, stress hormones like adrenaline can inhibit oxytocin - the hormone that supports labour progress. When someone feels tense, rushed, or anxious, it can become harder for labour to establish and settle.
Hypnobirthing helps by:
- supporting a calmer nervous system
- reducing anticipatory anxiety
- encouraging conditions where oxytocin can function more effectively
In the course, there are specific audios and practices designed for induction settings -helping you settle, stay focused, and manage waiting periods without spiralling.
Just as importantly, hypnobirthing supports:
- asking informed questions
- understanding induction options
- pacing decisions rather than feeling swept along
This is not about “avoiding” induction — it’s about approaching it with clarity and confidence.
Hypnobirthing for Caesarean birth
Whether planned or unplanned, Caesarean birth can feel emotionally intense.
Hypnobirthing supports Caesarean birth by helping with:
- mental and emotional preparation
- confidence before surgery
- calm and grounding at key moments (preparation, spinal placement, first contact)
- tracks to for pain and to support healing afterwards
The prenatal work also matters. When the nervous system has practised settling repeatedly during pregnancy, it’s often easier to remain calm during medical procedures.
Many parents also find the tools helpful:
- in the early postnatal period
- for reducing anxiety after a surgical birth
- during recovery and wound healing, where relaxation and reduced stress can support the body’s natural healing processes
The course includes guidance and audios specifically adapted for Caesarean birth, rather than trying to apply labour-focused techniques where they don’t fit.
Hypnobirthing and VBAC
VBAC preparation often carries an extra emotional layer.
Hypnobirthing is particularly supportive here because it helps with:
- confidence after a previous birth experience
- addressing fear and anticipation
- building trust in decision-making rather than outcomes
The focus is not on “proving” anything or forcing a particular result. It’s about feeling mentally prepared, grounded, and supported -whatever unfolds.
The tools can be used flexibly during labour, medical discussions, and moments of uncertainty.
Hypnobirthing for breech birth
Breech presentation can bring a lot of emotional noise: conflicting advice, time pressure, and fear-based information.
Hypnobirthing can help by:
- reducing stress and tension
- supporting calm focus and body awareness
- helping you feel more centred while exploring your options
The course includes specific audios and guidance for breech presentation, alongside tools to support clear thinking, questions, and decision-making as plans evolve.
Why a skills-based approach matters
What all of these situations have in common is change.
That’s why this course doesn’t teach rigid scripts or rely on one ideal scenario. It teaches:
- nervous-system regulation
- mental clarity under pressure
- practical self-hypnosis and mindfulness skills
These are transferable skills — useful whether birth is straightforward, medical, fast, slow, planned, or unexpected.
