How to Overcome Fear of Flying: A Psychological and Hypnotic Approach
Whether it's before booking the ticket, the night before you travel, sitting in the waiting lounge, walking down the tunnel to the plan or as the place takes off flying phobia can stop you living your life to the full. It's perfectly understandable fear, we are not designed to fly as humans and despite being one of the safest ways to travel, it's the most feared.
Sometimes it's also a pattern that has been passed down, have you got a parent, a partner, or a trusted adult that in the past shoed fera of flying.
You’re not alone if you’re afraid of flying. For some, it starts days before take-off. For others, it hits the moment the plane doors close: panic, nausea, tears, or the overwhelming urge to get off can overwrite the desire for adventure, travel, sitting on a beach in the sun, or even going to see a loved on.
Some avoid booking trips altogether. Others take tablets, grip the seat, and suffer through it.
This isn’t just about nerves—it’s a form of flight anxiety, and in many cases, it’s a deeply rooted flight phobia. But there is a way through. If you’re searching for how to overcome fear of flying, the answer may lie in an unexpected but powerful place: hypnosis.
What causes flight phobia?
Fear of flying often stems from a perceived loss of control. It’s your brain doing its job—trying to protect you. But the problem is that it responds as if flying is dangerous, even though it’s one of the safest forms of travel.
The fear response comes from your amygdala—the part of the brain that scans for threat. If it has learned that flying = danger, it hijacks your system with panic, even when your rational mind knows better.
This explains why reassurance rarely works and why logic can’t override the fear.
The more I fly the more nervous I get.
Interestingly, flight phobia doesn’t just affect nervous or occasional travellers. I often work with clients who fly regularly for work or family, and over time, they’ve developed a growing sense of dread. They’ll say things like, “I’ve flown so many times — surely the odds are catching up with me.” This is a classic example of cognitive distortion. The brain, overloaded by repeated exposure to a feared situation, can start to associate familiarity with inevitability. But fear isn’t a sign that flying has become less safe—it’s often a sign your nervous system is exhausted and on high alert. Hypnosis helps reset that emotional loop, grounding you in the present rather than spiralling into imagined worst-case scenarios.
When fear of flying starts after becoming a parent
I see many parents who have been adventurers before, and suddenly feel paralysed by flying. The idea of leaving your children behind or keeping your baby safe in unfamiliar environments can trigger intense anxiety because your protective instincts are heightened, and your brain may interpret flying as a threat to your child’s wellbeing or your ability to care for them. This kind of postnatal flight anxiety is something I see often—and it’s entirely treatable once we unpick what’s really going on beneath the surface.

Are you gaining from your fear?
A curveball question I often ask clients is: What do you love about fear of flying? Or what do you gain from this fear?
This might sound strange, but many people unconsciously benefit from their fear. In psychology, this is known as secondary gain—the hidden reward or protection that comes from maintaining a fear or symptoms.
Ask yourself:
- Do you receive more attention, comfort, or control because you're afraid?
- Does being afraid of flying give you permission to avoid certain trips or obligations?
- Is your fear masking a deeper anxiety about letting go or being far from home?
These patterns don’t mean your fear is imagined—only that your brain may be trying to help you by creating emotional safety. When we identify and shift this gain, fear often eases naturally.
Why Hypnosis Is So Effective for Flight Anxiety
If you're searching for flying phobia treatment, hypnosis offers a powerful solution. Rather than managing the fear, it helps reprogramme the brain so the fear doesn’t arise in the first place.
Through hypnosis, we can:
- Gently revisit and shift past flight experiences
- Use guided imagery to create new calm associations with flying
- Anchor feelings of safety and confidence that you can take with you onto the plane
- Address subconscious beliefs and fears that are fuelling the anxiety
- Build new neural pathways that reduce overreaction from your fear centres
Hypnosis is deeply relaxing, but also focused. You remain aware and in control, but your brain becomes far more receptive to new ideas, associations, and solutions.
What the Neuroscience Says About Flying Phobia Treatment
During hypnosis, your brain moves into a highly focused and relaxed state. The default mode network—the part of your brain associated with overthinking—calms down. Meanwhile, areas responsible for emotional regulation and decision-making (like the anterior cingulate cortex) become more active.
This makes hypnosis an ideal state for emotional learning and for rewiring the associations your brain has built around flying. You are rewriting your experience of flying not simply blocking fear. This is a really important distinction. Many therapies just give you calming techniques, that are like a sticking plaster.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
For most people, 2 to 4 sessions are enough to make a noticeable change. Some feel calmer after just one. All sessions are tailored to your needs and may include a personalised hypnosis track for travel prep or to use during your flight.
Sessions can be held online or in-person, depending on what feels most convenient and comfortable.
