Why Your First Birth Wasn’t Just 'Good Luck'
“I thought it was luck… but I realise now I created the right conditions.”
– A second-time mum after revisiting her birth preparation
You may have heard the words, “you were lucky to have such a great first birth”, or “you had it easy for a first time mum”. What they don’t know is that you may have prepared well, or maybe you are someone who just births well. At the moment I have a client who is on her third baby and she births fast which is her main fear. So her affirmation is “I am incredible birthing machine” when it gets powerful!
When people suggest that you had a first birth that was luck or a fluke, then it sows the seed of doubt…...and if you’ve done hypnobirthing you know what that means, don’t you?
Going back to preparation, it’s likely that either you were super prepared and you created the right internal and external conditions for birth, or that like my client you are an incredible birthing machine! And you can absolutely do it again.
Why Second-Time Mums Sometimes Feel Less Confident
It seems strange, doesn’t it? You’ve done it before, you know you can do — but the closer you get to birth the more fearful you get and this is how our brains work.
Everyone jokes about how we forget birth so we can have more babies, but even a positive birth experience can fade in memory, especially when life is busy and you haven’t had time to reflect or integrate it.
Our brains are always wired for safety, and it starts to look for threats, especially during big life changes like pregnancy.
Thoughts may start to run through your mind like….
- “Did I just get lucky with my first birth?”
- “What if this baby’s in a tricky position?”
- “I should probably prepare more this time — but how?”
Was Your First Birth Just a Fluke? Mostly likely not.
Here’s the neuroscience to prove that.
Memory is shaped by more than fact — it’s influenced by your emotions, context, and, importantly, the stories others tell you.
If your first birth was calm and empowering but others didn’t validate that experience and the work you put in preparing, framing it as a one-off, your brain may not store that experience in a way that builds future confidence. That’s why mindset work matters so much the second time around. Your nervous system needs reminding: birth can be safe, powerful, and be a positive experience.
Hypnobirthing Isn’t Just for First-Time Mums
If you're looking for a hypnobirthing refresher, you're in the right place.
Hypnobirthing isn’t just a one-time skill — it’s a set of tools you can revisit to reset your mindset, calm your body, and tune into your intuition.
Through an online course you can reconnect with the deeper work:
- You can remember how you felt safe in your body... and what you did when you didn’t
- You’ll remember contractions and how you managed them with tools
- You’ll recall the people around you and what they did for you
- You’ll be reminded of how well you advocated for yourself
- You’ll remember that you can do it
Even better you’ll know how to make tweakments to the tools, the room, the support, your plan. You’ll know what worked well for you so you can focus on those things. This means it will take less time to prepare.
It’s not about repeating everything. It’s about remembering what worked, deepening your tools, and recognising that you created the outcome last time — not luck.
Will my body remember?
Not only your body… but also your brain will remember. It’s like dusting something off. You did the prep before, the brain has created pathways, your body remembers.
